Junior Underground Geologist
About the Role
This is an opportunity to build a strong underground geology foundation in a real operating environment, where your work has a direct impact on production outcomes.
As a Junior Underground Mine Geologist, reporting to the Senior Underground Geologist, you will play a key role in delivering daily underground grade control activities. Your work will include underground geological mapping, stope and ROM inspections, ore and waste delineation, and supporting material movement reconciliation. You will also contribute to maintaining high‑quality QAQC practices and assist with diamond core logging and drill rig supervision as required.
You will work closely with mining engineers, geotechnical engineers, survey and underground supervisors, gaining first‑hand exposure to how geology integrates with mining execution. This is a hands on role where clear communication, attention to detail and practical problem solving are essential.
What sets this role apart:
- You will be working underground from the outset as a Junior Underground Mine Geologist, contributing directly to live operations
- The Cowal geology team is known for strong technical mentoring and internal progression
- You will gain broad exposure across grade control, drilling, mining and planning interfaces
- Cowal’s long mine life provides stability, learning continuity and genuine career pathways
This role operates on an 8 days on / 6 days off roster with 12 hour days, based at Cowal, a residential site near West Wyalong.
About You
You have the fundamentals in place and are looking for the right environment to turn theory into capability.
You hold a tertiary qualification in geology or geoscience and are motivated to develop as an underground geologist. Whether you are a recent graduate or have some early industry exposure, you are seeking a role that is practical, team driven and focused on learning by doing.
You are comfortable working underground, enjoy collaborating with different disciplines, and take pride in producing accurate, reliable work. You communicate clearly, ask questions when needed, and understand the importance of QAQC, safety and compliance in daily operations.
You’ll be well suited to this role if you:
- Are genuinely interested in building a career in underground mine geology
- Enjoy hands on fieldwork and being part of an operational team
- Communicate effectively with mining, drilling and technical stakeholders
- Are eager to learn, take feedback and continuously improve
- A manual C‑class driver’s licence is required. Exposure to underground mining and grade control systems (Leapfrog &/or Deswik) is advantageous, but not essential — what matters most is your attitude, work ethic and willingness to learn.
Whether you’re experienced in mining or come from a transferable industry like agriculture or trucking, we value attitude and potential just as much as experience.
