Manager - Sustainability
About the Role
As Manager Sustainability at Cowal, you will provide Senior Leadership with a strong focus on Health and Safety, while overseeing Environment, Training, Risk and Emergency Response functions. This pivotal role is responsible for ensuring the development, implementation and continual improvement of robust Health and Safety Management Systems that meet statutory requirements and support safe, high‑performing operations.
Reporting to the General Manager, you will champion a proactive safety culture, lead risk reduction initiatives and provide trusted advice to site leadership. You will also maintain strong relationships with regulators, community stakeholders and government agencies to protect and enhance the organisation’s licence to operate.
Your work will involve:
You will be accountable for leading Health and Safety outcomes across site operations while providing oversight across Sustainability disciplines, including:
- Leading and developing a multidisciplinary team across Health and Safety, Environment, Training, Risk and Emergency Response
- Driving a strong, visible safety culture that promotes risk awareness, interdependent behaviours and continuous improvement
- Developing, maintaining and challenging Health and Safety Management Systems to ensure statutory and operational compliance
- Leading hazard identification, risk management, incident investigations, injury management and rehabilitation processes
- Ensuring effective occupational health monitoring, safety reporting and regulatory compliance
- Overseeing emergency response capability, site security and crisis preparedness
- Developing and delivering site safety, health, environmental and social responsibility strategies, plans and budgets
- Providing expert health and safety advice to the General Manager and supporting long‑term strategic planning
- Engaging with regulators, workforce representatives, community leaders and government agencies
- Monitoring legislative changes and ensuring ongoing compliance with relevant NSW and Commonwealth legislation
About You
You are an accomplished Senior Leader with significant experience in Health and Safety management within a medium to large organisation, ideally within mining or heavy industry.
You hold a tertiary qualification in Health, Safety or Environmental Management, or bring substantial practical experience across these disciplines, supported by a strong understanding of mining legislation and its application to operational risk management.
You are recognised for your ability to lead by example, influence safety culture and develop high‑performing, accountable teams. Highly collaborative and an effective communicator, you build strong relationships with leaders, employees, regulators and external stakeholders.
Your leadership approach is values‑driven and aligned with safety, excellence, accountability and respect, and you are committed to protecting people, strengthening systems and driving sustainable performance.
