Our Cowal Gold Operation (CGO) is a cornerstone asset located near West Wyalong in central NSW with a leadership team that continually focus on embedding a values driven culture aligned with our company vision to create a premier, global gold company. Cowal has recently begun underground stoping and approvals for an extension to the existing open pits are currently underway, which extends the mine life well into the next decade

 

About the role

 

Reporting to the Manager - Sustainability this position is responsible for the application, implementation, reviewing, monitoring, and continual improvement of the Cowal Gold Operation’s Environmental Management System (EMS). This includes ensuring  ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental obligations (internal and external), whilst promoting sustainable environmental management with daily operational activities. The position also provides support to the Manager - Sustainability with regulatory approvals and permitting processes.

 

 

 

Key responsibilities/ result areas in this role include:

 

  • Offering advice, environmental services, and coaching on applying environmental policy and standards on site.
  • Monitoring Commonwealth and State legislation for relevant changes and risks.
  • Championing the development and implementation of the environment management system and governance programs to ensure compliance and minimize environmental harm and risk.
  • Overseeing the environmental monitoring and reporting program.
  • Managing the development of environmental management plans, strategies, and associated programs and activities.
  • Assisting in annual strategic and tactical planning for the environmental function, facilitating the development and implementation of performance metrics, work programs, and budgets.
  • Promoting the company’s reputation and relationship with government regulators, local landholders, and stakeholders through positive consultation and proactive engagement.
  • Supervising and coaching direct reports, providing career development, planning, and pathways.
  • Assisting with approvals, permits, and feasibility studies as required.
  • Acting as the designated point of contact for the department, providing support on managing environmental risks and compliance with obligations.
  • Attending meetings as required to facilitate duties.
  • Providing emergency response for injured fauna, spills, or other environmental incidents.
  • Demonstrating behaviours aligned with Evolution Mining values.
  • Proactively identifying and addressing hazards, leading the team in recognizing at-risk activities and involving specialized expertise for requisite controls, encompassing safety, environmental, and operational considerations.
  • Championing Evolution Mining's Values and commitment to Safety, Environment, Inclusion and Diversity, and Emissions Reduction (Net Zero).

 

 

About you

 

The ideal candidate for this position must have a degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related scientific discipline. You must demonstrate recognized expertise in water management, waste management, incident investigation, and environmental management with a focus on regulatory compliance. Experience in a mine site environmental role is required, along with practical experience in mining, construction, or engineering environments. You should have a deep understanding of environmental approvals requirements, particularly within the NSW and Commonwealth regulatory frameworks.

 

The successful candidate should have a proven track record in establishing, implementing, and managing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and frameworks, adhering to standards such as ISO14001. Leadership qualities are essential, including demonstrated experience in managing people and departmental budgets. You will exhibit proficiency in mine rehabilitation and possess the ability to inspire teams, promote collaboration, and display leadership presence. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are crucial, with a high level of proficiency in report writing and the capacity to make group presentations. It is important to have competencies in lead auditing, Pronto, MS Word, and Excel, as well as data management and software proficiency. Excellent stakeholder engagement, relationship-building skills, analytical skills, and knowledge of local ecosystems are highly desirable attributes for this role. The candidate should be adept at knowledge sharing, interacting with all levels of the organization, and engaging with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
