At Northparkes, we are known for having innovative, technical and collaborative people. The operations include block caving, sub-level caving and open pit and was the first mine in Australia to use the block cave mining method. Your Benefits
We offer a comprehensive range of benefits to support your transition and enhance your experience throughout the program. At our Northparkes site, housing is provided in a mixed house with your own room, and housing costs are subsidized. You will need your own transport between the house and the site. Flights are provided at the beginning and end of the program, as well as for the Christmas break. If you choose to travel to Parkes by personal car, fuel costs will be reimbursed. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided to ensure your safety and comfort on the job. Candidates who successfully complete the vacation program will be fast-tracked into our graduate program.
This is a 12-week residential program running from December to February, on a roster of 5 days on 2 days off and 4 days on 3 days off working a 8.5-hour day.

About the role
The Vacation Student – Reliability Engineering (Mechanical) is a developmental position designed to build technical capabilities within the Planning and Reliability team. The role provides exposure to equipment performance analysis, failure investigations, and reliability improvement initiatives. Each task is supervised by a mechanical reliability engineer, aligning responsibilities with the student's engineering background and learning goals.
Responsibilities include
- Assisting with equipment inspections and condition monitoring
- Supporting root cause analysis of mechanical failures
- Updating maintenance strategies and reliability databases
- Participating in shutdown planning and execution
- Collecting and analysing equipment performance data
- Collaborating with trades and engineering teams on improvements
- Preparing technical documentation and reliability reports
About you
The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering similar. Ideally you will have some experience with relevant software and systems through studies or placements. You should demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a ability to communicate effectively across verbal, written, numerical, and graphical formats. You will be able to uphold high work standards, build strong relationships with peers and leaders, and work independently to meet personal and team goals. A valid manual driver’s licence and willingness to live and work remotely are essential for this role.
