About the role

The Permitting Principal is a new role, which supports the mine’s environmental and regulatory compliance by coordinating and executing permitting strategies under the direction of the Manager. The role ensures that all permits and approvals required for safe, responsible, and sustainable mining operations are obtained, maintained, and adhered to. It acts as a key technical resource for environmental policy, water management, and regulatory processes, while working collaboratively with internal teams to meet permit obligations and support operational and project objectives.

 

This potion is offered as FIFO or residentially in Red Lake, Ontario.

We offer a competitive salary, bonus structure and future growth. The compensation range for this role is $142,452 to $192,729 CAD.

Key result areas in this role include:

Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Governance

• Provide subject-matter expertise and coaching to site teams on the application and interpretation of environmental policies, standards, and corporate governance requirements.

• Monitor federal, provincial, and local legislation, regulatory trends, and permitting processes to identify relevant changes, potential risks, and opportunities for compliance improvement.

• Develop, maintain, and oversee the site’s permitting calendar to ensure timely submission, renewals, and compliance reporting.

Permitting Strategy & Execution

• Lead the development, preparation, and submission of permit applications for ongoing operations, mine expansions, new infrastructure, and major capital projects.

• Interpret and evaluate conceptual designs for water balances, wastewater management plans, and related engineering studies; oversee analysis and interpretation of water quality data to support permitting documents.

• Coordinate with internal technical teams (engineering, environmental, geoscience, operations) and external consultants to compile high-quality technical documentation that meets regulatory expectations.

• Oversee the implementation of permit conditions and commitments, ensuring operational teams understand and comply with all requirements.

• Maintain accurate permitting documentation, records, and compliance tracking systems.

Stakeholder, Government, and Indigenous Relations

• Collaborate with the Community Relations team to provide technical support for engagement, consultation, and community-requested information related to environmental and permitting matters.

• Promote and strengthen the company’s reputation with Indigenous/First Nation communities, municipalities, and other stakeholders through transparent communication, proactive engagement, and respectful consultation.

• Interface with federal and provincial regulatory bodies throughout the permit approvals process to ensure timely, compliant, and well-coordinated submissions and responses.

Environmental Performance & Risk Management

• Identify permitting risks and constraints early in project planning; develop risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans.

• Support environmental impact assessments, baseline studies, and monitoring programs necessary for permitting and operational compliance

• Review technical reports, environmental data, and engineering designs to assess potential impacts and ensure alignment with permit requirements.

Strategic Planning & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Support long-term mine planning activities by identifying permitting pathways, timelines, and constraints for future development stages.

• Work closely with Operations, Mine Planning, Engineering, and Sustainability teams to ensure permitting requirements are integrated early in project design.

• Provide leadership in developing permitting strategies for closure and reclamation planning, including progressive reclamation permits and post-closure regulatory requirements.

About you

As a Permitting Principal, you will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Mining Engineering, Natural Resources Management, or a related field. Advanced degree (M.Sc., MASc, MBA, or related) is considered as an asset. Professional designation or eligibility for designation in Ontario (e.g., P.Eng., P.Geo., R.P.Bio., EP) is an asset and may be required for senior-level work. The Permitting Principal should have 7-10+ years of progressive experience in permitting, regulatory compliance, or environmental management within the mining, industrial, or natural resources sectors. It is also important that you have / can demonstrate:   

  • In depth knowledge of Ontario and federal legislation relevant to mining operations, including:
    • Mining Act (including mine closure planning, amendments, and rehabilitation requirements).
    • Environmental Protection Act (EPA).
    • Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA) and Permit to Take Water (PTTW).
    • Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA) processes.
    • Fisheries Act and fish habitat offsetting authorization requirements.
    • Impact Assessment Act, where applicable.
    • Endangered Species Act (ESA) permitting requirements.
  • Demonstrate experience leading or managing major permit applications for mine expansions, infrastructure upgrades, or new project development.
  • Experience engaging with Ontario and Federal ministries (MECP, MEM, MNRF, DFO, ECCC, etc.) and navigating complex regulatory processes.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic permitting guidance during engineering design, prefeasibility, and feasibility project stages.
