About the role

As the Geotechnical Engineer (Rock Mechanic), you will be responsible for evaluating mine plans, mine sequencing and ground support requirements using rock mechanics principles, theories and ground control techniques to ensure the stability of all underground workings, while maximizing safety and optimizing production targets at Evolution Mining Red Lake Operation.

 

•     Schedule:  5 days on/ 2 days off/ 4 days on/ 3 days off – 9.5-hour shifts

•     Permanent residential role

 

Key Result Areas in this role include:

  • Ensure that all practices and activities within the Mine Department are consistent and conform to the requirements of the Ontario OH&S Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants, and other relevant legislation, as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Review underground mine sequencing on a block-by-block basis as well as a mine wide basis and provide recommendations as required.
  • Review and evaluate designs of underground openings with regards to stability and ground support requirements.
  • Evaluate each mining block for stability using rock mechanics principles and techniques to make recommendations as required.
  • Perform numerical modelling and analysis of mine sequencing and ensure up keep of mine wide model and required databases.
  • Prepare and/or update mine design which assesses the ground stability of active and proposed workings of the mine as per OH&SA.  Select, plan and install instrumentation to effectively monitor ground conditions.
  • Evaluate existing underground workings (excavations, pillars etc.) to establish stability and provide rehabilitation plans as necessary.
  • Review performance of ground support systems as required.
  • Conduct quality control tests on existing ground support used on site as per policy.
  • Conduct ground control inspections to assess ground conditions and existing ground support (quality and integrity) as required.
  • Ensure rock mechanic concerns are communicated to the underground department (and other personnel) in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure seismic systems are up to date and operational.
  • Provide reports and notifications to personnel on site about seismic activities as required.
  • Interpret seismic events and spatial relationships with geological and structural features.
  • Remain current with geological and structural information including mapping structural features underground or examining geology data available.
  • Review, update and implement all ground control policies and procedures as required.
  • Assist the Training department in training new underground supervisors and other personnel as required in ground control techniques and basic rock mechanics principles.
  • Provide directions to Rock Mechanics support personnel as required.
  • Complete JWDs and performance evaluations on direct reports. 
  • Complete reports (unusual occurrences, MOL, inspection reports) as required/requested by supervisor.
  • Work on special projects, as assigned.
  • Participate actively in operating and capital projects.
  • Actively seek new ground control innovations to be evaluated with the potential of testing on property.

  • Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Adhere to all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

About you

As a Geotechnical Engineer (Rock Mechanic), you will possess a Bachelor of Applied Science/Engineering Degree in Mining or Geological/Geotechnical Engineering. Must be eligible for Professional Engineer status within the Province of Ontario.

 

It is also important that you have/ can demonstrate: 

•    Knowledge of and ability to apply rock mechanical principles

•    Proficient with stress modelling (Map3D) and analysis of mine-sequences

•    Able to identify ground stability problems and perform analysis using RocScience software

•    Proficient in use of mine drafting and planning software (AutoCAD, Deswik, etc.)

•    Geotechnical mapping ability, able to identify key structures

•    Familiar with various ground support systems and their application

•    Knowledge of seismicity and seismic systems as it relates to mining

•    Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team and independently

•    Good presentation, written communication, and verbal communication skills

•    Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

•    Ability to speak, read, and write in English at an intermediate level

•    Interest and ability in pursuing Professional Engineer designation would be ideal
